The size of the market obscures its actual geography. When a club like Flamengo or River Plate deploys detection infrastructure for its youth categories, it scans its own staff with growing precision. Young athletes already integrated into these academies benefit from monitoring comparable to that of European second-division clubs. Those who play in neighborhood clubs in northeast Brazil or in Argentine provincial leagues remain out of frame.

Their performance does not exist in databases. They are not measured by anything.

60% of Potential Talent Off the Radar

In South America’s local leagues, a limited share of young athletes has access to performance monitoring technologies, according to data compiled by the Helmi Group. In Brazilian and Argentine elite clubs, this rate is substantially higher. This gap separates two detection systems that coexist on the same continent.

What these figures concretely imply deserves to be stated bluntly. If access to measurement tools conditions the visibility of athletes to recruiters, then the best-equipped clubs detect their own residents better, and leave in the shadows young people who never had the chance to join a structured academy. Detection ceases to be selection by talent and becomes selection by preexisting infrastructure. A fast child, technically superior to his peers, but born in a region without an equipped club, disappears statistically before a recruiter even sees him.

Economist Daniel Susskind, in A World Without Work, documents an analogous mechanism for the labor market: technology amplifies the capabilities of individuals already well-positioned, widening the gap with those that amplification systems do not reach. Detection sports follow exactly this pattern. Individual calculation is therefore solid, but collective calculation differs. Elite clubs that optimize detection within their academies capture talents already accessible to them. The structural question for continental sport is to know how many potential elite athletes remain invisible because they never played in a measurable environment.

There is no precise answer to this question, and that is precisely the problem. The absence of data on local leagues makes any serious estimation of the real talent pool impossible. We know that talents sometimes emerge from atypical trajectories; several players in Brazilian and Argentine national teams were detected late, through the eye of a human observer, in contexts where no digital tool existed. But these cases remain happy accidents in a system that structurally reduces their probability of occurrence.

The Liberal Thesis Against Market Limits

A strictly liberal reading of this situation would say: the market works. Clubs invest in technology because it pays them back; the best talents eventually emerge because the football market has an interest in finding them; less wealthy clubs will gradually adopt these tools as costs fall. Technological diffusion always follows this pattern.

GPS sensor costs have fallen substantially over the past decade. Tools once reserved for European first-division clubs are now accessible to more modest budgets. IOC Sportic is a socio-educational inclusion program supported by the IOC, the Inter-American Development Bank, and Fundación SES, which combines physical activity with introductory digital literacy courses for disadvantaged youth in Argentina, Colombia, and Ecuador. It does not concern the deployment of sports performance monitoring technologies.

The history of technological diffusion in Latin American sport shows that the market alone does not correct these asymmetries at sufficient speed. Access inequalities stabilize at levels that consolidate the advantages of already-dominant actors. An Argentine provincial league club accumulates a deficit in equipment, historical data, internal analytical skills, and integration into recruitment networks that value standardized metrics. Even with cheap GPS sensors, catching up to an academy like Boca Juniors would take years. Actors Seeking to Correct These Inequalities

Initiatives exist and deserve to be named. In Latin America, Brazilian collective sports federations have begun deploying simplified mobile monitoring applications, less precise than professional sensors, but capable of producing basic data on athletes outside major academies.

Uruguay and Chile have experimented with public-private partnerships with local sportech startups to equip their school leagues with initial measurement tools. Results remain modest in volume, but the model is interesting: the state finances the basic infrastructure, local clubs contribute to adoption, and data flows back to national databases that recruiters from major teams can consult. This is an attempt to create a common detection language, accessible beyond private academies alone.

Startups like StrataGem Analytics in Brazil and TalentTrack Latam in Argentina develop video-analysis tools accessible from a smartphone, intended for clubs without sensor budgets. The economic model remains fragile; these companies are seeking their balance, but their existence signals a market space that major players have not yet addressed.

Data Governance as an Underestimated Challenge

The absence of regulatory framework creates an informational asymmetry between equipped clubs and local clubs. A recruiter consulting an optimized database refines his choices among existing profiles: athletes absent from this database remain invisible, which reinforces the perceived legitimacy of academies already integrated into the system. This bias is structural and unintentional. Available metrics implicitly define the selection criteria to which all athletes are then compared, including those these metrics never measured, which conditions both the visibility of talent and the representation of what it means to perform.

To the question of access to tools is added a more difficult challenge to address: the ownership of data produced by these tools and the use made of it.

In major clubs, performance data of young athletes is owned by the academies. It feeds internal selection decisions, but it does not circulate freely. A player who leaves an academy after non-renewal does not recover his performance profile to present to another club. Data standardization is virtually nonexistent between clubs and between competition levels. A talent measured in a local league with a simplified tool produces metrics incompatible with those of a professional academy.

This fragmentation is not accidental. It benefits clubs that have invested in their own proprietary systems and have no interest in opening their data to competitors. Sports data governance in Latin America remains almost entirely private. There is no specific continental regulatory framework for the sports sector, even though several major countries, including Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, and Colombia, have national data protection legislation that in principle applies to the sports sector.

This is probably where the structural challenge of the coming years lies, more than in simple access to sensors. If national federations and continental confederations, with Conmebol leading, could impose a common data format and a right for athletes to access their own performance metrics, the detection system would become structurally more porous. Talents from local leagues could enter the radar of elite recruiters without necessarily passing through a private academy.

This scenario remains conditional. It presupposes political will that major federations have not yet clearly demonstrated, and difficult trade-offs between well-organized private interests and diffuse equity objectives. But the technical ingredients exist. The question is whether Latin American sports institutions will seize the issue before the detection gap widens further.
