In Asia, sports data divides faster than it progresses. Some Japanese, South Korean, and Chinese clubs have invested in predictive analytics systems. Meanwhile, continental results are highly unequal: Thailand ranks ahead of China in the AFC standings, while Indonesia is significantly lower.
The question for Asia is who will finance access, and whether regional federations will take the initiative before the gap becomes entrenched.

The gap widens between Tokyo and Bangkok
Take two typical but fictional clubs: a J-League club, the Japanese championship, and a Thai League club, the top division in Thailand. The first has an analytics department with several data engineers, GPS sensors on every player during training, and a system that models injury probabilities week after week. The second has a coach who trusts his eye. These two situations coexist today in Asia, sometimes in the same continental competition.
The AFC Champions League regularly brings these two realities together. Japanese and South Korean clubs have won a significant number of continental titles, while Chinese clubs have achieved several victories in recent years. Several Asian teams use predictive analytics. This figure, if confirmed, would measure declared understanding of analytical tools rather than a gap in results. But it points in a direction.
This gap follows a logic of accumulation. Clubs that know success tend to improve their resources and analytical capacities. Several Southeast Asian clubs have unequal analytical resources.
Concrete actions by equipped clubs
Predictive analytics in football, or baseball, basketball, cricket, covers several distinct tools. Biomechanical tracking systems record the physical data of each player during training and matches: work load, acceleration, muscle pressure zones. Injury prediction algorithms cross this data with medical history to identify risks before they materialize. Tactical analysis tools process videos to map opposing patterns and optimize positioning.
The Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks baseball club in Japan is one of the most documented cases in Asia. It has been using advanced tracking systems for several years to model ball trajectories and physical profiles of its players. In South Korea, the K-League has invested in partnerships with data providers so that several clubs can access automated video analysis platforms. In China, Chinese Super League clubs have hired sports directors with data science training, a practice still marginal five years ago.
These investments have real costs. Platforms like Catapult, Hudl, or StatsBomb require subscriptions that represent a modest fraction of a major European club’s budget, but a significant expense for a Thai League or Indonesian Liga 1 club. Add to this the human cost: training or recruiting analysts capable of exploiting this data. Even when access to tools exists, it is not necessarily exploited.
Accumulation of backlog in Southeast Asia
The gap is not explained by a lack of interest. Thai, Indonesian, and Vietnamese football has undergone real professionalization over the past ten years: stadiums fill up, TV rights increase, foreign investors enter certain clubs. But the structure of leagues varies, and available resources remain different by region.
The problem is also institutional. The Thai, Indonesian, and Vietnamese federations have different analytical resources than Japan or South Korea. The Japan Football Association, for example, has developed training programs in analytical tools for coaches at all levels. The Thai federation already has structured systems for management and data, even if their relative maturity is not established here.
There is also a network effect: consultants specialized in sports analytics are concentrated where markets are solvent. Tokyo, Seoul, and Shanghai attract experts; Bangkok and Jakarta are still training them. This imbalance in the distribution of skills reflects a dynamic observable in other sectors: technology arrives before the people capable of operating it.
The competitive gap observable for Southeast Asian clubs aggregates several factors: less consistent sports results, variable attractiveness for top-level players, variable recruitment according to resources, and injury management that varies from club to club.
The Premier League solved part of the problem
The English model deserves attention.
The Premier League did not end sports inequality; Manchester City remains Manchester City. But it illustrates how institutional intervention on tool access can shift the dynamic at the bottom of the table, where clubs cannot afford what the big clubs purchase without thinking.
The mechanism is simple: when basic data is accessible to all, differentiation shifts to the quality of human analysis and decisions made from that data. A small, well-organized analytical club can compete with a large club that does not exploit its information well. The tool alone does not win a match; interpretation matters as much as raw data.
This lesson could be transferable to Asia, but it would require a federation or league capable of acting as coordinator rather than mere referee. Technology tends to amplify existing resources. Without organized redistribution, it can widen gaps rather than close them.
Paths for Asian federations by 2030
The AFC, the Asian Football Confederation, manages territory ranging from Australia to Uzbekistan, Japan to Yemen. This heterogeneity makes uniform policy difficult, but not impossible. Several avenues are under study or in experimental stages.
The first is data pooling at the continental level. If the AFC negotiated group contracts with major sports data providers, clubs in less developed leagues could access tools at fractional costs. This applies the principle of a purchasing cooperative to sports technology.
The second is training. The Japan Institute of Sports Sciences (JISS) has developed performance analysis training programs that are beginning to be exported to other Asian countries. South Korea has a similar approach through its Korea Institute of Sport Science. These institutions could play a more active role in regional dissemination.
The third is the creation of shared data standards. Today, data produced by some Thai, Indonesian, and Vietnamese clubs are often in proprietary or unstructured formats, which can complicate comparative analysis and collective learning. Common standards greatly facilitate lasting and interoperable pooling, without being an absolutely prerequisite technical condition in all cases.
An increased concentration of performance around Northeast Asian clubs could reduce the appeal of continental competitions, which would work against AFC interests. This type of dynamic where technological advantage translates into lasting economic advantage is difficult to reverse once it has taken hold.
Southeast Asian pioneering clubs open a path
To say Southeast Asia remains apart would be inaccurate. A few clubs have gotten ahead of their leagues.
In Vietnam, Hà Nội FC club began integrating video analysis tools into its match preparation, with technical support from a partnership with a European organization. In Indonesia, Persija Jakarta recruited a performance analyst trained abroad, a first for a Liga 1 club. In Thailand, Buriram United, the country’s most titled club, invested in GPS systems for physical tracking of its players.
These initiatives remain concentrated and often depend on the will of a particular manager or investor. They have not produced systematic dissemination to other clubs in their respective leagues. They do indicate, however, that obstacles appear to be economic and organizational in nature.
The example of the Premier League, which these pioneering clubs suggest, indicates that access to analytical tools can modify behavior within a club, even if results take time to appear. Training local analysts, structuring a club’s data, and building a decision-making culture based on figures rather than intuition alone requires several seasons. This work can nonetheless be launched now, before the gap widens further.
The real unknown is political: will the AFC, national federations, and governments concerned see this technological gap as sufficient reason to act? Sport is often the last domain where states invest in technology dissemination. It could be one of the first to benefit if someone decides to try.
